The Obama Town Hall

For eight weeks during the Presidential Campaign, the Obama Town Hall conducted nightly online sessions giving various groups and individuals working the campaign an opportunity to collaborate and speak out on the issues. A different topic was reviewed and discussed each evening, along with live participation during the three debates. The room was accessible via Facebook, at WeCaucus.com and conferROOMS.COM. Over 40,000 visits were recorded and 11,000 members became fans on Facebook. After the election, the space was transitioned to online house meetings that corresponded to the President’s initiative for citizen input and engagement in solving various action items such as health care and the environment.

Session highlights are listed below. Enter the room that was used to conduct the Town Hall meetings via the Facebook link or directly using these buttons.

Dialogues in Democracy
Using a previous version of this technology developed for Palo Alto research firm Polimetrix, Dr. James Fishkin of Stanford University's Center for Deliberative Democracy brought together citizens from across the country in a series of Dialogues in Democracy.
In October and November 2007, 300 adult Americans engaged in a national discussion about citizenship and democracy in modern American society. 20 groups met for an hour each week for four weeks and deliberated on a different topic regarding Citizenship in the 21st Century.
Dr. Fishkin presented the results of his study to a gathering in Colonial Williamsburg as seen on the PBS special By the People on January 4, 2008.
Dr. Fishkin will once again be using conferROOMS technology in its current version to conduct an online series in October 2009. Highlights will be posted here at the conclusion.
